The discussion of our Church's Christian Youth Group

with the Metropolitan of Demetrias & Almyros

Ignatios.

The blessings and the wishes of our Most Reverend Metropolitan are the first essential.

The short dialogue with our spiritual father that follows confirms our initial thoughts, namely that technology, computers and the internet need to be the means to an end and not an end in itself.

Question.

Do you believe Most Rev. Father that the  internet serves as a source of information, or something else?

Answer.

The internet is a library where you can find for example a fantastic book, but where you can also come across some rubbish.

The right choice and the correct use of the information is in the hands of the user.

Question.

The Christian Youth of Demetrias also wants to have access to this information, so what do we need to be careful of?

Answer.

Yes, they have the right to make use of it, because they constitute  the present and the future of the Church. However, their correct use of the information should be based on certain criteria.

We need to pay the necessary attention to this, so that it will not become an end in itself but a way of using it as a functional means for the young in accordance with the liturgical life of the Church and the guidance of spiritual fathers.

Question.

Can technology help the Church?

Answer.

Technology is like a knife.

With the knife we cut the bread but with the knife we can also hurt another person.

The Church can take advantage of technology, but she should not over-emphasise its meaning.

The work of the Church is and always will remain spiritual in nature. She has as its primary aim the salvation of people.

As a method and way of communication technology can be used. However, always and only as a means to an end, since nowadays the means very often becomes an end in itself.
